Apple Pie with Crumb Topping Recipe

Happy fall y’all! It never quite feels like fall exactly here in San Francisco because we don’t get the seasons changing / gorgeous colorful leaves thing, but I still have my “Autumn in the Park” candle burning as I type this! Fall makes me want to do all the cozy things, like drink hot cider and carve pumpkins and yes, make apple pie.

When Wayfair asked me to participate in their annual #BattleOfThePies campaign and share a pie recipe, I jumped on the opportunity because it always feels like a fun challenge to try to bake something new! I’ve mentioned it before, but E’s absolute FAVORITE food is pie, and we had a pie bar at our wedding, so pie feels like an extra special thing to make (and EAT!). Last year, I tried out an traditional apple pie recipe and shared on my blog, but this time around, I wanted to closely follow my grandma’s original apple pie with crumb topping recipe. She is the queen on all things apples like pie, applesauce, cider, apple butter, etc. so I knew the family recipe would be A+.

Alright – here’s the recipe!


6-7 apples, peeled and chopped
1/2 cup sugar
1T cinnamon
1/4t nutmeg
3T heaping cornstarch
1t salt

1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup flour
1/2 stick butter, melted

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees

2. Peel apples (I did this while mindlessly watching Gossip Girl #noshame) and chop into small pieces. In a large bowl, mix together apples with sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cornstarch and salt. Set aside.

3. Melt small amount of butter and a tablespoon or so of brown sugar in a cast-iron skillet over medium heat. Stir constantly until sugar is dissolved. Take off of heat.

4. Roll out pie crust (I just picked one up from Trader Joes) and gently place it into the cast-iron skillet over the melted butter and brown sugar mixture. Adjust the dough and/or pinch crusts as needed.

5. Melt butter and mix together with brown sugar and flour to create crumb topping for pie.

6. Add apples and mixture into the pie crust in the skillet.

7. Add butter + brown sugar + flour crumb topping

8. Set skillet in oven, set timer for 50 minutes to check on the pie! I ended up letting my pie cook for just over one hour.

That’s it! The pie was easy to make and SO delicious and I loved the way my house smelled while the pie was baking in the oven. HEAVENLY! This pie is super yummy topped with ice cream (hot pie + ice cream = the perfect match) or even for breakfast in the morning. I definitely like the crumb topping better than the traditional pie crust topping – it had so much more flavor and texture and felt less doughy. Just my personal preference though. 🙂
